The rich history of jade in China

Leslie Franks, author of Stone Medicine, captures the deep love of jade in China in the following description.

“The Chinese name for jade is yu precious stone. [Its] Chinese character implies a symbiotic relationship between the Earth and humanity and includes the radical for king.

The king has responsibility to treat the realm and its people respectfully. As the head of state, the king is expected to be a highly cultivated human being, demonstrating to his and his people the virtues espoused by Confucian philosophy, such as loyalty, righteousness, integrity, compassion, and wisdom.

If the king behaves in such a way, it is expected that his subjects will interact similarly to their own smaller ‘kingdoms’ of family, community, and land.

Also, if all of humanity behaves as a benevolent king to his realm, respecting not only one another but also the Earth, the Earth will reward humans with jade.”

The five virtues associated with jade

Jade has five virtues, according to ancient texts:

  • Benevolence because it is lustrous and warm
  • Righteousness because it is the same inside and out
  • Wisdom because its sound is lovely and resonates into the distance
  • Bravery because it does not bend, even if it has to be broken
  • Purity because it is a clean and clear stone

When you wear jade, you purify and promote the understanding of virtues that relate to the specific color of jade you are wearing.

The virtues associated with the different colors of jade include:

  • Black for clarity and wisdom
  • Green for righteousness
  • Lavender for integrity
  • Yellow for loyalty
  • White for devotion and purity

Jade comes in colors ranging from black/gray, green, lavender, yellow, and white. When polished, jade can appear translucent when held to the light. When worn as jewelry, it quickly interacts with qi in the body.

You may notice jade changing color as it absorbs disharmony in the body.

When the color darkens, it is absorbing toxins from the blood. When it grows paler, it is absorbing toxins from the qi.

Jade has a sodium aluminum silicate composition. It may also contain iron, calcium potassium, magnesium, titanium, manganese, and other minerals.

The sodium, potassium, and manganese regulate fluids in the body. This ability treats:
