How I discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Chinese medicine was not something I set out to practice from a young age. In fact, I discovered its incredible healing and wellness benefits later in life when I needed them most.

In many ways, TCM found me as much as I found it!

Up until then, my career had been in leadership roles as an educator working with young students. If you asked me 15 years ago if I would be teaching TCM to improve people’s health and happiness and even saving their lives, I don't think I could have imagined it.

So why the change?

Because Traditional Chinese Medicine saved my life.

During my early 40s, I experienced severe gynecological problems with awful physical symptoms. My doctor's solution was microwave treatment. I asked the question, “But aren't my symptoms telling me something?”

My doctor’s reply shocked me!

I was told my symptoms didn't matter, that the microwave treatment would eliminate them. This made no sense to me. My body was desperately trying to tell me that something was seriously wrong. But all the doctor cared about was treating the symptoms instead of getting to the root cause of the problem and resolving that.

I knew there must be a better way.

Traditional Chinese Medicine – The ancient path to modern healing

I immediately began researching and looking for alternative healthcare methods and soon discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine.

As an academic researcher and lecturer of qualitative research methods at the University of Denver, I have great respect for good quality data, so I found the 3,000 plus years of peer-reviewed TCM case studies and best practices impressive.

Instead of isolating and controlling conditions in a lab, the qualitative research conducted by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners was holistic and set in the real world. Doctors observed and treated people as they lived their lives.

Everything a person experienced mattered.

Emotions, weather, diet, relationships, prenatal conditions, body constitution, environment, lifestyle, etc., all told the doctor the story of patients' lives and how best to improve their health.

Looking at humans as living, breathing beings resonated. My respect deepened as I learned more about the view that people are a microcosm of the larger universe.

I’ve always had a deep energetic connection with people, animals and the natural world. Even from a young age, I’d noticed the effect seasons, emotions, and food had on my body. This perspective made more sense to me than looking at my body as separate from nature.

The emphasis on getting to the root of a problem to heal the body, versus masking and covering symptoms affirmed my feelings.

Inspired, I found a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, Dr. Zhizhong Nan, who cured my symptoms in just five days of acupuncture treatment. He taught me a great deal about Chinese medicine and supported me as I began my student journey. Dr. Nan worked closely with another gifted healer named Dr. Dayong Hou, and both practitioners now serve on Radiant Shenti's Advisory Team.

Experiencing TCM in action in China

In 2016, I was fortunate to spend two years as Director of Curriculum at Soong Ching Ling School, one of the most prestigious schools in Shanghai. Living there further convinced me that people in the West were needlessly suffering and dying. Every day I was in awe of how much people understood about their own bodies.

They knew what to eat and drink for myriad conditions, what to wear during different seasons, when to eat certain foods, how to exercise, and more.

People actively pursued health.

Instead of talking about which pharmaceutical products they would be on for the rest of their lives or lamenting numerous chronic health problems, they went to the park to dance, practice tai ji and qigong, and be among friends.

Walking just three blocks in any direction from my apartment, small shops were selling an abundance of fruit and more vegetables than I ever knew existed. My imagination exploded with possibilities. I soon realized right to the core of my being that people don’t needlessly have to suffer.

They can live happy, healthy, and long lives.

Continuing the Journey

While in Shanghai, I had the great fortune to meet Dr. Zhang Yifang, author of five books on Chinese medicine. She later became my physician and trusted mentor, and even today, I continue to study under her tutelage. From her vast knowledge, I learned even more about the holistic approach of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the use of diet to heal the body.

I began formal studies of TCM and continued my work upon my return to the United States. I have since earned my diploma in Chinese Medicine Nutritional Therapy and received certificates in TCM from Dr. Zhang, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Since 2019, I have shared the healing power of Chinese medicine through Radiant Shenti Membership classesTCM coursesarticlesvideos, and health and wellness products.

I will continue to share my knowledge to help you and your loved ones achieve optimum health. To make sure you can live the longest, most healthy, happiest life possible. That's what I wake up every day excited about.

Your health, happiness, and longevity matter to me, and I'm here to help you shine.

Wishing you a Radiant Shenti day!

Juli
